Mild steel plates are a type of carbon steel with a low carbon content, typically ranging from 0.05% to 0.25% by weight. Unlike alloy steel, they lack significant quantities of alloying elements. When carbon content is increased beyond this range, the material is classified as cast iron (CI). The low levels of carbon and alloying elements give MS plates their unique characteristics.

These plates are especially valued for their excellent ductility, ease of welding, and machinability, outperforming many traditional grades. They can also be enhanced through processes like heat treatment and quenching. The presence of carbon and minimal alloying elements helps impede dislocation movement within the crystal structure, thereby increasing the plate’s overall strength.
